When I first started May I Ask for One Final Thing?, I honestly thought I knew exactly what I was getting into.
You know the type of story. A noble girl is engaged to a prince, another girl appears, the engagement gets broken off, everyone believes the new girl, and eventually another handsome male lead shows up. Then the rest of the anime becomes romance, jealousy, misunderstandings, and endless drama.
I expected another generic villainess romance.
I couldn't have been more wrong.
The First Episode Immediately Sold Me

Episode one is easily the strongest part of the anime.
Instead of crying or quietly accepting the false accusations, Scarlet asks one final favor…
...and then tries to punch Terenezza Hopkins right in front of everyone at the royal party.
That moment completely changed my expectations.
It tells you exactly what kind of protagonist Scarlet is. She's elegant on the outside, but once someone pushes her too far, she'll solve the problem with her fists.
It was hilarious, satisfying, and unlike most villainess anime I've watched.
Scarlet Is the Best Part of the Series

Scarlet El Vandimion carries this entire anime.
She isn't another weak heroine waiting for someone to rescue her. She takes action herself.
What I liked most is that she never pretends to be perfect. Whenever corrupt nobles or terrible people appear, she has absolutely no problem beating them up.
Watching villains get exactly what they deserve never gets old.
She's easily one of the most entertaining female protagonists I've watched recently.
Leonardo Deserves More Credit

Scarlet's older brother, Leonardo, became one of my favorite characters.
Poor guy spends almost the entire series trying to protect the Vandimion family's reputation while Scarlet keeps creating chaos wherever she goes.
Every time he thinks things are finally under control, Scarlet destroys another noble, another building, or another political situation.
His constant suffering became one of the funniest running jokes in the series.
Julius Is Actually a Great Prince

One thing I appreciated was how different First Prince Julius is from the typical prince character.
After seeing how Kyle treated Scarlet, I expected Julius to be just as bad.
Instead, he turns out to be calm, intelligent, and surprisingly enjoyable to watch.
His interactions with Scarlet are some of the best moments in the anime because he understands her personality instead of trying to change it.
The comedy between these two works really well.
Crown Prince Alflame Is Comedy Gold

Another character I ended up enjoying a lot was Crown Prince Alflame Rea Vankish.
Every time he appears, he somehow finds another excuse to ask Scarlet to marry him.
And every single time, Scarlet responds the same way—with her fists.
Their interactions never stopped being funny. It became one of those running jokes that I looked forward to in almost every episode. No matter how many times Scarlet beats him up or rejects him, Alflame always comes back like nothing happened.
At first, I honestly thought he was just going to be another useless comedy character.
But when the series finally lets him fight, he completely changes that impression.
Without spoiling too much, Alflame has an incredible presence whenever he gets serious. He goes from being the guy who gets punched every episode to someone who absolutely dominates in battle. That contrast made him even more enjoyable because you never expect someone so goofy to be that strong.
He's one of those characters who can make you laugh one minute and then look genuinely cool the next.
Nanaka Was Surprisingly Funny

Nanaka became one of my favorite supporting characters.
He's always around Scarlet and adds plenty of comedy whenever he appears.
I honestly spent most of the season wondering whether Nanaka was a boy or a girl.
Apparently, that's intentional.
Nanaka is actually a male beastkin, but his appearance is meant to confuse both the characters and the audience, which makes some scenes even funnier.
I Ended Up Loving Saint Diana

When Diana was first introduced, I thought she was going to become another annoying rival.
Instead, she turned out to be incredibly wholesome.
Her friendship with Scarlet was something I didn't expect at all.
Rather than competing against each other, the two support one another, and their chemistry adds a nice emotional side to an otherwise action-heavy series.
She ended up being one of the cutest characters in the anime.
Scarlet Playing Matchmaker Was Unexpectedly Hilarious

One part of the anime that completely caught me off guard was the small romance between Leonardo and Saint Diana.
Diana develops a crush on Leonardo after he saves her, and from that point on, Scarlet somehow decides that it's her job to play matchmaker.
Watching Scarlet, someone who normally solves every problem with her fists, suddenly start helping Diana prepare for a date was surprisingly wholesome.
She encourages Diana to dress more casually and gives her confidence to spend time with Leonardo like a normal girl instead of acting like a perfect saint. It was a nice change of pace from all the fighting and political drama.
The date itself was full of cute and funny moments. Diana was clearly nervous, while Leonardo treated her with genuine kindness without even realizing how much she liked him. Seeing Diana put cat ears on Leonardo during the festival and watching the two enjoy a normal day together made them an unexpectedly adorable pair.
What made these scenes even better was Scarlet's reaction. She genuinely wanted the date to succeed, but because she's still Scarlet, she somehow ended up punching troublemakers at the festival while Julius quietly paid for all the damage she caused.
I wasn't expecting this romance subplot to become one of my favorite parts of the season, but it added a lot of charm to the story. It gave both Leonardo and Diana more personality and balanced the action with some wholesome comedy.
The Bigger Story Is More Interesting Than I Expected

As the season progresses, it becomes clear that the political conflicts aren't the only problem.
The conflict between Chronoa, the God of Time, and Palmia, the Goddess of Love, plays a huge role in everything happening behind the scenes.
Without spoiling too much, I liked how the anime slowly revealed that there was a much larger mystery than simply Scarlet's broken engagement.
It gave the story more depth than I initially expected.
My Favorite Comedy Moment

The funniest moment in the entire season happens near the end.
Scarlet is fully prepared to beat up Julius, and Leonardo desperately tries to stop her before she creates another international incident.
That entire sequence had me laughing.
It's one of those moments that perfectly captures what this anime does best: mixing action, comedy, and ridiculous character interactions.
Things I Didn't Love
No anime is perfect.
While I enjoyed the season overall, I do think some of the later episodes spend more time setting up future storylines than resolving the current ones.
There are also several mysteries that are only partially explained, so it definitely feels like the story is just getting started.
Hopefully, those are explored in a future season.
Final Thoughts

May I Ask for One Final Thing? surprised me far more than I expected.
I started it thinking it would be another generic villainess romance filled with clichés.
Instead, I got a fun fantasy series with a hilarious protagonist, entertaining action scenes, great comedy, and characters that kept me watching every week.
If you enjoy fantasy romance, villainess stories, and heroines who would rather throw punches than wait for someone else to save them, I think you'll have a great time with this anime.
I'm definitely hoping it gets a second season because it feels like the real story is only beginning.
The Intro Is Really Cool
Final Rating (7/10)
It's not a masterpiece, but it's a genuinely fun watch that exceeded my expectations and gave me one of my favorite female protagonists of the season.
